where we are
proACTIVE parkinsons project is headquartered in Volcano, CA, population 84, up in the beautiful northern California Seirra foothills, about an hour from Sacramento. above the fog and below most snow, our elevation of 2500 feet is almost perfect. most major sources of employment dried up when the mills and mines closed, and for many years this area suffered. recently discovered by bay area people as an antidote to their hectic big city life and commutes, our economy is now booming!

our largest employer is the Jackson Rancheria Casino and Resort which provides employment to thousands of local people. sleepy little Amador County, Calaveras County and Tuolumne County are not so sleepy anymore! of course, along with population increases come increased numbers of people suffering from Parkinsons Disease, so our work is ever growing.

why we exist
proACTIVE parkinsons project exists to meet the needs of a previously NEVER-SERVED population.

before we existed there was nobody to call if you were just diagnosed, or alone and isolated. not a single book on Parkinson Disease was available at any main county library, let alone in the branches. if a person contacted a regional or national PD organization for help, those requests were frequently not anwered, leaving the requester frustrated and angry. there was not an active support group, no public educational efforts, no participation in health-related community events. there was no support for families struggling to understand what was happening to their loved ones, no in-home visits for homebound PD patients. ALL OF THIS HAS CHANGED! the information and support which were not available is now available to anyone who contacts us.
who we are...

the proACTIVE parkinsons project began with one person attempting to meet the un-met needs of people suffering from Parkinsons Disease, their caregivers, their families and friends in our community. first came one support group, then educational presentations to area clubs, organizations and civic groups, then work with medical professionals, then in-home visits and family meeting facilitation. as interest grew, along came radio and television interviews, feature articles and the development of print materials. a "full plate" doesn't begin to describe the first three years of the organization!

a decade spent in health facility administration of extended care facilities in Indiana and Ohio provided an insider view of diseases and how the can ravage the body and mind. years in marketing and promotion in Chicago taught the difference targeted efforts can make to a product or project's success. training adults who wished to enter the workforce brought forth many varied skills to increase their confidence and competence.

with the birth of proACTIVE parkinsons project, sarah johnson has found a way to combine the expertise of past experiences with her mission to make a difference in the lives and futures of those people in our communities who are directly impacted by Parkinsons Disease.

sarah johnson is the California Third District Congressional Coordinator for the Parkinson's Action Network in Washington, D.C. and is on the Advisory Board of the Area 12 Agency on Aging.
